The method
Before using the result
- This is a local worksheet. Findings and supplied criteria remain the responsibility of the person recording them; the output is not a certificate or regulatory approval.
- Readings are instrument-specific; no automatic equivalence between pin, pinless or different material scales.
Worked examples
These original training examples illustrate the method for InterNACHI Certified Professional Inspector (CPI). Use the matching “Load example” button above to explore a variation; example values are not equipment settings or prescribed criteria.
1. Worked example
Preserve instrument mode and material alongside each home-inspection moisture reading. Avoid comparing unlike scales or labelling all readings as moisture percentages.
Supplied material measurements
| Measurement date | Location | Material | Instrument ID | Mode / measurement method | Reading on stated scale | Instrument reading unit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-10-01 | Wall A | Wood | Meter A | Wood scale | 24 | Instrument units |
| 2026-10-03 | Wall A | Wood | Meter A | Wood scale | 18 | Instrument units |
- Group readings by location, material, instrument, mode and unit.
- Compare trends only within the same series. An instrument scale is not automatically a moisture percentage.
- Readings recorded: 2
- Like-for-like series: 1
No drying target, microbial conclusion or cleaning threshold is inferred from these readings.
2. Comparison example
Compare a different supplied condition using the same method. For Home Inspect Cert, the important check is that the input meaning, units and method assumptions still match the problem.
Supplied material measurements
| Measurement date | Location | Material | Instrument ID | Mode / measurement method | Reading on stated scale | Instrument reading unit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-10-01 | Joist B | Wood | Meter A | Wood scale | 27 | Instrument units |
| 2026-10-03 | Joist B | Wood | Meter A | Wood scale | 21 | Instrument units |
- Group readings by location, material, instrument, mode and unit.
- Compare trends only within the same series. An instrument scale is not automatically a moisture percentage.
- Readings recorded: 2
- Like-for-like series: 1
No drying target, microbial conclusion or cleaning threshold is inferred from these readings.
Check your understanding
1. Which relationship is used?
Group and date-order readings only when location, material, instrument, mode and unit match.
2. Which assumption should you check first?
This is a local worksheet. Findings and supplied criteria remain the responsibility of the person recording them; the output is not a certificate or regulatory approval.
3. How should you verify a different unit system?
Convert every input to the displayed calculation units first. Equivalent physical inputs must give equivalent results; a unit label alone does not convert a number.
